Imagine having your own online storage, which you control. You store information once and decide who can access what, when you need services like mortgage applications or medical care.

This is what Solid can do. It’s a bit like carrying all your data in a rucksack with lots of pockets. To access the data, different apps can only open the pocket you allow them to open, rather than taking the whole rucksack. The rest stays private.

Solid lets people take control of their data and combine it to achieve new results. It gives creators new collaborative tools while passing power back to users. It’s technology that returns the web to its original vision of serving people.

Use Solid

Unlike many of today's platforms, Solid returns the web to its original vision of empowering individuals and enabling collaboration. You choose which applications to use with your data rather than being locked into specific platforms. New services, applications and AI agents can access your information instantly with your permission, encouraging innovation. Your data remains yours even when you change providers or try new services, applications or AI agents.

For developers

Solid is a file system for the Web. In the same way that you can store a PDF on your laptop and then choose to read or edit it using one of a dozen other applications, Solid lets you put documents into an online file system. You have control over which people, websites, apps, and AI agents can read and edit them, and when they can do so. If you’re interested in developing an app with Solid, you can find technical documents, resources, and repositories.

Solid was developed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee's team at MIT in collaboration with the Qatar Computing Research Institute and Oxford University and nurtured by a dedicated global community for many years. This community includes people with a range of technical skills, like developers and researchers, as well as people with non-technical backgrounds, such as policy. What they all share is a passion for the project’s success.

This community can now benefit from more reliable infrastructure, documentation and support to create an environment where their contributions can have an even greater impact.

When I invented the World Wide Web, I envisioned technology that would empower people and enable collaboration. Somewhere along the way, we lost that human-first approach; today's web often prioritises profits over people. Solid returns the web to its roots by giving everyone direct control over their own data.
