Doteveryone has today announced that it is ending its work after five years of fighting for better tech, for everyone.

Since its inception, Doteveryone has inspired change in how tech is made and used and has driven others to deliver that. Having set the responsible-technology debate in motion, the think tank has decided to close, and is passing on stewardship of some of its essential tools to other organisations.

The Open Data Institute will take on Doteveryone’s TechTransformed resources for innovating responsibly, and The Ada Lovelace Institute will ensure that their portfolio of research remains in the public realm.

Our mission is to help companies and governments build open, trustworthy data ecosystems. Our work involves creating a world where data works for everyone – where people, organisations and communities can use data to make better decisions and be protected from any harmful impacts. We are embracing TechTransformed because it is a great asset that helps organisations be responsible with technology. It aligns with our vision and will help us achieve our mission.

Our Vice President, Jeni Tennison, said: “The achievements of Doteveryone should not be understated. In the past five years they have encouraged people to believe that they can, and should, have agency over digital technology, in much the same way that we have sought to do with data. We are proud to continue this important work and look forward to seeing how TechTransformed can evolve as part of the ODI.”

The ODI is a great believer in turning general principles about ethical, equitable and responsible data and technology into practical tools. Our Data Ethics Canvas is already being used in a variety of organisations, including by some product teams; we’ve also recently developed a toolkit, full of useful guides and workbooks to help the private sector develop approaches to data access and sharing within an ethical framework.

The Consequence Scanning toolkit is a great complement and addition to our existing products. Our plan is to integrate it into these toolkits, market it alongside them, and to build our internal capability and materials to deliver training and workshops around it, so that we can support organisations that want to use it.
