walking up steps in trainers

We are seeking a contractor to support us in the implementation of the OpenActive Open Booking API including: augmentation and improvement of existing technical reference and explanation documentation; the creation of tutorials for developers; extending test-suite coverage; and resolving minor bugs in existing OpenActive tooling

  • Closes: 26 October 2021

The OpenActive Open Booking API is a technical standard designed to support an open data ecosystem in the physical activity sector. It does so by defining a common, open, API interface for managing transactions between a booking system and front-end brokers, allowing any implementing broker to connect with any implementing booking system, and vice versa.

Previous funding rounds (see previous invitations to tender for Demonstrate the impact and value of tools developed within the OpenActive initiative  and Implementation of the Open Booking API ) have demonstrated the viability of the specification and served to identify the areas of greatest implementation challenge in adoption of the API. The purpose of this tender is to address these implementation challenges, in particular through:

  • augmentation and improvement of existing technical reference and explanation documentation
  • the creation of tutorials for developers giving a step-by-step guide through the different phases of implementation
  • extending test-suite coverage to a wider range of scenarios, particularly those encountered by larger booking systems
  • resolving minor bugs in existing OpenActive tooling.

With regard to the points concerning software (the OpenActive test-suite and other tooling), the gaps and bugs to be rectified have already been logged and identified. It is expected, however, that documentation and tutorials will be developed iteratively and incorporate ongoing feedback from developers.

OpenActive code is entirely open source: interested organisations are invited to review the OpenActive Developer Site and GitHub Organization (in particular the test-suite repository) to inform their submissions.

The successful bidder will work in collaboration with the Open Data Institute (ODI) who will provide guidance and review throughout.
