Join Dr. Kay Achenbach, Head of the Data Ethics Professional course at the ODI, as she leads a discussion with a panel from Global Fishing Watch. An innovative non-profit organisation that uses data and AI to safeguard the global ocean commons by shedding light on human activities at sea.

The conversation will focus on why Global Fishing Watch decided to invest in data ethics and how the organisation has translated their ethical principles into action. Attendees will gain insights into a fast moving organisation's journey towards becoming a leader in the field of data ethics. And there’ll be plenty of opportunities to ask questions!

Speakers

Paul Woods, founder and Chief Innovation Officer, Global Fishing Watch

Paul Woods is the principal architect of the Global Fishing Watch technology platform.

Before leading the organisation’s innovation work, Woods served as interim CEO and helped establish Global Fishing Watch as an independent nonprofit in 2017. He now heads the development of new technologies and applications of big data and remote sensing to solve challenging problems facing our ocean.

Hannah Linder, Senior Manager in Technology and Engineering and Data Ethics Lead, Global Fishing Watch

Hannah Linder oversees Global Fishing Watch’s core data pipeline and the products that stem from it. Linder works closely with all teams across the organization to incorporate quality data into its various monitoring and analysis products.

Previously, Linder was a senior fisheries analyst for the organization, where she led the initial development of the carrier vessel portal and conducted analyses for associated transshipment reports.

Acainā Luiz de Azevedo, Project Manager and Data Ethics Lead, Global Fishing Watch

Acainã Azevedo is a technical project manager at Global Fishing Watch, where he coordinates cross-organizational projects, and serves as practice lead for the organization’s internal project management framework. He works closely with staff throughout the organization to align strategy, implementation, and impact of new technology and innovative data. 

Azevedo received a Master of Science degree in Education from the University of São Paulo.

Elea Himmelsbach, Senior Consultant, the ODI

Elea is a Senior Consultant at the ODI, leading projects in a variety of sectors including arts and heritage, health, and international development. She currently explores different approaches to data stewardship by facilitating workshops and knowledge exchanges for new and established data institutions and provides advice and guidance on data governance.

Chair Dr. Kay Achenbach, Head of the Data Ethics Professional course, the ODI

As Senior Learning Specialist and Head of Data Ethics at the Open Data Institute, Kay delivers data literacy training to hundreds of learners each year across the public and private sector, including the UK Civil Service. She leads the delivery of Data Ethics Professionals and works directly with organisations to embed data ethics into workflows and projects. Kay has a background in geophysical research and worked for over a decade in secondary schools prior to joining the ODI.
