Washington Technology Solution’s Cathi Greenwood, the state of Washington’s Open Data Program Manager, shared her presentation on the importance of data ethics in organisations, focusing on the current efforts to use demographic data responsibly and for positive purposes. The presentation aims to explore strategies that can be implemented now to ensure that collected data does not harm the individuals it is meant to benefit in the future.

Data Ethics and 'Smart' City Tech, 22 May 2025
Angela Schöpke-Gonzalez, Data Ethics Professional and PhD Candidate at the University of Michigan School of Information, discussed data ethics strategies for implementing ‘smart’ city technologies.
She discussed how a U.S. city implemented a ‘smart’ parking meter system through a public-private partnership, that benefits and risks of the implementation to city residents, and steps that both local governments and private technology companies could take to minimise risks, and obstacles to realising data ethics in ‘smart’ city technology implementation.
