We respond to HM Treasury’s call for evidence on its Digital Competition Expert Panel, focusing on social benefits and the need for more data to fuel better services

In October 2018 HM Treasury sought views and evidence on its Digital Competition Expert Panel.

The ODI’s response to this call focuses on the reusable but potentially restricted nature of data, and how this is affecting firm behaviour, competition, and consumer surplus in the provision of online marketplaces, social media, and other digital services.

We discuss the benefits that can be generated through enabling better matching between consumers and suppliers, and suggest ways in which more social and economic benefits can be created with better data infrastructure.
