TransportAPI was founded in 2010 by Jonathan Raper, Dr David Mountain and Harry Wood to create a single source of public transport information for developers that included timetable, live departure and disruption information from open data sources. Our is the realisation of this goal and now offers feeds to developers as well as powering web sites and business services on a freemium basis. The TransportAPI powers apps such as CityMapper, UK TravelOptions and and supplies data to live transport widgets embedded in web pages.

TransportAPI is privately owned and has financed its growth by developing services for partners such as Pearson PLC (API development), Trapeze Group UK (app development), and Transport for London (software development) as well as consultancy work for clients such as Ptolomus, Where Business and NHS London. We have received grants from the Technology Strategy Board in the Informed Personal Travel, Digital Services Feasibility and Internet of Things Feasibilities programmes, which have helped support the development of the TransportAPI.
