Co-founded by the inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and renowned AI professor, Sir Nigel Shadbolt, the ODI works to build a strong, fair and sustainable data economy by helping businesses and governments get data to people who need it, informing decisions, driving efficiencies and creating opportunities using data.

About the role

Reporting to the Head of Technology, the Product / UX Designer will be the main user experience practitioner in our small and agile ODI Labs Team prototyping, building and maintaining a number of innovative tools and services with a focus on data publishing and management. This is an opportunity to have an impact on the end-to-end user experience of a portfolio of tools and services, from the understanding of user needs to the fine details of usability and the polish of UI design.

Key responsibilities

As a Product/UX Designer, you will work closely with a small team of frontend and backend developers to create and enhance tools and services which solve real problems.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Design features and interface from early sketch to well-documented designs.
  • Guide the team in the exploration and refinement of ideas through creative techniques and processes.
  • Work hand-in-hand with developers in the team to translate designs to reality.
  • Collaborate with and help lead the work of Visual Designers and UX agencies. Conduct user research and work with the rest of the team to discover and prioritise the scope, scale and features of our tools.

About you – skills, knowledge, and experience

  • You are a creative User Experience practitioner who loves designing products and services that not only look and feel good, but also solve real problems.
  • You are just as good with a sketch pad as with screen-based design tools.
  • You have a keen understanding of how your designs translate to web code.
  • You have experience designing tools using real data.
  • You have worked in an agile development context and know how best to integrate your design practice in an iterative development process.
  • You are seriously interested in understanding the needs of the users as a way to inform your design work.
  • You can work fast and switch between different projects easily.

Ideally, you will also have some experience in user research, either through education (e.g. a qualification in HCI) or practice (having participated in, or even led, qualitative user research and/or user testing).

Desirable experience

  • Experience of (and enthusiasm for) working in the open: our work at the ODI is open by default and the work you do in our team will be for, and with, the open source community.
  • Experience designing with code and live data.
  • Experience with Sketch preferable.
