As part of ODI Learning Month 2021 and the Data Governance and Ethics series, this two-hour online course, run by our experts, you will be given an introduction to the concept of data ethics, how ethics is addressed in other domains, and how data ethics can be applied to help organisations avoid harmful impacts and increase trust in new products and services.

Course overview

Data ethics is a rapidly emerging area. Increasingly, those collecting, sharing and working with data are exploring the ethics of their practices and, in some cases, being forced to confront those ethics in the face of public criticism. A failure to handle data ethically can harmfully impact people and lead to a loss of trust in projects, products or organisations.

In this two-hour online course, run by our experts, you will be given an introduction to the concept of data ethics, how ethics is addressed in other domains, and how data ethics can be applied to help organisations avoid harmful impacts and increase trust in new products and services.

Who is this for?

This course is introductory and jargon-free. It is intended for anyone working in public, private and third-sector organisations who wants to become familiar with data ethics and start to bring it into their organisation.

The course will be attended by people from multiple organisations. We recognise that people may not want to discuss some of their current ethical issues in front of other organisations, therefore this workshop uses real-world examples to bring the topic to life.

What will you learn?

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Define the difference between morals, ethics and law
  • Explain why data ethics applies to more than just the use of data
  • Apply the data ethics canvas to evaluate projects involving data
  • Make a number of recommendations to improve the ethical handling of data

When is the course?

October 5th 2021 @ 10:00 (BST) for 2 hours

Course prerequisites

No previous knowledge of data is required. An understanding of how data is used in your organisation will help you apply what you learn and take practical action.

What is ODI Learning Month?

National Learning and Development Month is a global event celebrated every October, that encourages people to learn and build brand new skills. In support and celebration of this, the ODI has our very own Learning Month that we run in tandem, ahead of our annual summit.

Each year we focus on different topics. This year to coincide with the theme of Summit 2021, we’ll be looking at how we’ve all become ‘data people’ – more conscious than ever of the data we produce, use and share. Our three key areas of education will be: Building healthy open data ecosystems, Leading data transformation, and Data governance and ethics. All brought to you via a mix of training, webinars, and podcasts.

Our one-off programme has been created exclusively for Learning Month, and all of the training is available at a subsidised price. All the more reason to get stuck in and get learning!
