Brian Tshuma
Research Fellow
Brian Tshuma is an interdisciplinary researcher interested in what alternatives are emerging in the global south, in terms of practices, imaginaries, epistemologies or methodologies in relation to the adoption, use, and appropriation of data infrastructures. His research aims to explore new articulations of principles or institutions and what possible interventions can be developed to underpin a strand of data governance that can better account for the conditionalities and proximities of the global south. With a background spanning Law, Monitoring and Evaluation, Internet Governance and Public Policy from universities in South Africa and his home country (Zimbabwe), Brian will begin his PhD at the Information School, University of Sheffield in the autumn.
Brian is a 2022 Research Fellow, looking at societal transformations evolving at the intersection of emerging technologies and established governance approaches in sub-Saharan Africa, and how these transformations inspire new data institutions in to the region. He is supported by Joe Massey (Researcher) and Olivier Thereaux (Head of Research and Development).
