In 2023, the Open Data Institute (ODI) will be working in partnership with the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation (PJMF) to establish new programmes of work in support of our vision of a world where data works for everyone. This isn’t the first time we’ve worked together. We’ve previously worked with PJMF on our data institutions programme, which is focused on organisations that steward data on behalf of others for public, educational and charitable purposes. Our work in this area includes helping to implement data governance that meaningfully involves the public, designing new data trusts to tackle the climate crisis and mentoring emerging data institutions. This new funding of $1m will enable us to continue our work on data institutions, as well as develop ambitious new programmes of work to:
- Increase awareness of the positive impact and potential of participatory data stewardship, where people are actively involved in deciding how data is used and shared.
- Explore emerging privacy enhancing technologies, reduce barriers to experimenting with them and stimulate their use for social impact.
- Promote enhanced collaboration around data among nations states, companies and the global community through data diplomacy.

In partnership with ODI, we're innovatively reimagining the conception and development of participatory data stewardship models to protect digital privacy while also advancing global cooperation and progress.” More details about the ODI’s new programmes of work will be available in February 2023.
